About Barra
Barra is the southernmost inhabited island of the Outer Hebrides. Barra is best known for its rugged interior, golden beaches, grasslands and wild flowers. Castlebay is Barra's main harbour town and can be reached by a ferry from Eriskay.
The most famous landmark of Barra is the Kisimul castle which is immediately visible from the port of Castle bay. This is a famous 15th century castle built by MacNeil of Barra. Barra is also famous for holding a number of summer events which include "Barra Live", the island's music festival.
Getting around
There are several ways to explore Barra and the surrounding places which include Mingulay, Eriskay and Barra Head. Barra boat trips organises trips to these places. There are also car hire companies in Barra run by Peter Brown and Margaret Macmillan.
However, if not wanting to hire a car, then there are taxis available by Hatcher's taxis (who also organise tours) and buses serving different routes on the Island. There is also another option of hiring bikes from John MacDougall, probably the best way to explore the island's rugged coastline.
