About Dover

Backed by its famous White Cliffs, Dover is located in Kent, on England's south-eastern tip and is the UK's closest geographical point to Continental Europe; it is only 21 miles from the French port of Calais. Dover has long been one of the World's premier seaports, with centuries of maritime heritage. Julius Caesar tried to land at Dover during the Roman Invasion of 55 BC and was followed William the Conqueror, Napoleon and Hitler.

Its closeness to continental Europe makes Dover one of the United Kingdom's busiest cross-Channel ports, with 18 million passengers passing through each year. It is also a major port for freight, particularly for fruit and other perishables imported via the massive reefer cargo ships. Regular ferry services operate from Dover to Calais and Dunkerque.

In Dover you will find one of the largest castles in the country. The origins of this massive castle lie in the Iron Age. A Roman Lighthouse and Anglo-Saxon church can still be seen within the grounds.
