About Dun Laoghaire

The ferry terminal at Dun Laoghaire is one of the main entry points into Ireland from the United Kingdom. Dun Laoghaire is a large town and seaport close to the foothills of the Dublin Mountains in Ireland. Dun Laoghaire is on the coast about 7 miles (11km) south of Ireland's capital city, Dublin. Dun Laoghaire is reckoned to be the oldest town in Ireland. It was named after its founder, King Laoghaire, the High King of Ireland. He used the area as a sea-fort (Dun) for when he wished to start raids into France and Britain.

Getting There

By Car
If you are approaching Dun Laoghaire from the west - perhaps from Limerick, Portlaoise or Galway, you should follow the signs for Dublin until you get to the M50/N81. From there follow signs to Dun Laoghaire ferry port.

Driving from the North and the North West you should again follow signs for Dublin then take the Eastlink Toll bridge route, taking the N11 going south for Wexford and the South East, you'll soon find signs for Dun Laoghaire ferry port.

Coming from the South West and the South, following signs for Dublin you are likely to be coming via Waterford or Kilkenny or Carlow which heads for the N11. When you get to Loughlinstown, which is near Bray you will see signs for Dun Laoghaire Port.

The Dun Laoghaire ferry port is close to Dun Laoghaire's town centre. Travelling along the coast heading for the DART station you'll soon see the signs for Stena Line Ferries Terminal entrance. Travelling through Dun Laoghaire centre you should drive down Marine Road towards the sea and following signs to the ferry terminal.

By Bus
Bus Eireann operates services to and from Dun Laoghaire ferry port from around the country. Dublin Bus run regular services throughout Dublin City and County.

By Rail
Directly opposite the Dun Laoghaire ferry terminal is the DART (Dublin Area Rapid Transport) rail system with connecting services to the main rail and bus stations in Dublin. Trains operate every 10 minutes at peak times and 20mins off peak from 05.50 hrs to 23.00 Monday to Saturday and Sundays from 09.00hrs to 22.30hrs. Intercity trains connect Dublin to most of the towns throughout Ireland.
