Scandinavia Overview

Scandinavia is region in Northern Europe, and is made up of the five Scandinavian countries; Denmark, Norway, Sweden, Finland and Iceland. Scandinavia also includes the Faroe Islands which are administered by Denmark, Svalbard which is administered by Norway and Aland which is part of Finland.

Norway is famous for its deep fjords and beautifully rugged mountainous terrain. When arriving by ferry travellers can choose to enter via Oslo (the nation's capital), Stavanger or Larvik, and then travel on to one of the many other towns and cities. Norway is a country of beautiful scenery and terrain, which visitors are sure to find amazing and enjoyable, with many amazing activities to enjoy.

To the east of Scandinavia is Finland, which is made of hundreds of thousands of islands of differing sizes separated from each other by hundreds of small lakes. Finland offers visitors a wealth of cultural and historical sites to explore, as well as the unique and beautiful countryside. Arriving via ferry visitors can choose to enter Finland from the nation's capital of Helsinki, which is one of the most interesting cities in Europe, with a real cosmopolitan atmosphere, fantastic festivals and attractions to appeal to all, especially in the summer.

To the south of Scandinavia bordering Germany is Denmark, which is the smallest and geographically flattest of all of the Scandinavian countries. Thanks to its location Denmark is also the most continental of all the countries as well. Denmark is a beautiful country with rolling hills and healthy green countryside, the climate is pleasant and fresh allowing visitors to take in the scenery on one of Denmark's quiet walking/cycle routes.

To the very west of Scandinavia visitors will find Iceland which is known for its amazing mountainous scenery, as well as the truly breath taking glaciers and waterfalls. Iceland is famous for its thermal spa's and bath houses where many locals and visitors choose to relax and unwind in one of the country's most iconic images. Iceland is also very popular with backpackers and campers and the country includes many camping and caravanning destinations.

Towards the centre of Scandinavia visitors will find Sweden, the largest of the Scandinavian countries. Arriving via ferry to Sweden travellers can choose to enter the country via one of many port towns and cities, such as Gothenburg on the western coast, Ystad on the southern coast or the capital city of Stockholm on the eastern coast. Sweden is the place to visit for some superb outdoor activities, the country is great for skiing, skating, hiking, canoeing, cycling and even berry-picking at the right time of year. Stockholm, Malmo and Gothenburg are all large cities, home to excellent shopping and some really high quality nightlife.
