Spain Overview
Spain is located in South Western Europe and shares the Iberian Peninsula with Portugal on the western end of the Mediterranean Sea. Spain has the second largest number of UNESCO World Heritage Sites in Europe after Italy, and also has the largest number of World Heritage Cities. Spain is considered by many as one of the most amazing countries in Europe due to its friendly inhabitants, fine cuisine, relaxed atmosphere and amazing nightlife.
Arriving by ferry you can enter Spain via the university city of Santander overlooking the bay at Bilbao. The city includes a great seaport and industrial centre as well as being home to a great financial centre also. Santander has also been home to the Guggenheim Bilbao Museum since 1997. The city also includes a variety of other museums such as the Maritime Museum of Cantabria and many superb beaches to relax on. In the northern area of Spain, visitors can find many wonderful golden sandy beaches, and gorgeous seas. Along the Bay of Biscay, visitors will find many old world ports that can be highly enjoyable to explore and offer many amazing sights. Along the bay you can also find lush green valleys and the Picos de Europa, which are the highest peaks in Spain, and have several quaint mountain villages that offer some truly breathtaking views of the local area.
In the east of Spain visitors will find Catalonia, home to the incredible city of Barcelona, where you can find many intriguing architectural sights, mainly influenced by the amazing artist Gaudi. To the south of Spain you will find the region of Andalusia, which although renowned for tourism and known to attract a large number of tourists from all over Europe, is also home to several hillside villages and towns that have remained mostly untouched by tourism and still offers visitors a look a traditional Spain. |
