About Kastelorizo
Kastelorizo ferry port lies on the easternmost, and smallest, of the Dodecanese Islands, lying halfway between Rhodes and the Turkish town Antalya. Kastelorizo's official name is Megisti.
Thanks to its advantageous geographical position as a trading post between Europe, Middle East and Egypt Kastelorizo developed into a prosperous island in the 1800's, with over 10,000 inhabitants. Today there are only a few hundred residents, and the island is becoming more of a tourist destination.
Kastelorizo has a mountainous and rocky landscape, perfect for walking, that provides the opportunity to witness some truly stunning views of the island, including across the beautifully picturesque harbour of Megisti, the biggest town on the island, with its colourful houses that are clearly influenced by the islands Turkish and Italian occupations.
On Kastelorizo the most notable attraction you can find is the stunning Blue Grotto sea cave, where the light of the sun, is reflected through the sea into the interior of the Grotto, which produces a dazzling blue colour. The Blue Grotto can only be reached by boat, and indeed boat excursions around the island are one of the highlights of a trip to Kastelorizo, and a great way to explore the island. There's also a 14th century castle that belonged to the Knights Hospitaller, and a former Ottoman mosque that has been restored as a museum.
Kastelorizo Terminal Facilities
The ferry port at Kastelorizo is only small and has very basic facilities. However, as the port is in the middle of the island's main town, all the local amenities are well within reach of the terminal.
Getting There
Kastelorizo is only a small island, and walking is the primary way to get around. Boat hire is the most popular way to reach different parts of the island away from the main town of Megisti.
