About Kirkwall
Kirkwall is located on Orkney off the north-east coast of Scotland. Kirkwall is the island's capital and was built around a wide sheltered bay in the northern part of the island. When arriving by ferry at first glance you be mistaken into thinking that Kirkwall is a sprawling urban site, but this is just the harbour, which has undertaken modern development. The town proper still retains its narrow winding streets and lanes of the old town in the local vernacular style, of which very little has changed over the centuries.
The town offers many amazing sights in and around the town centre, and the town itself. Many of the houses themselves date back to the 16th, 17th or 18th century, the town also calls itself home to the finest medieval building in northern Scotland, Kirkwall Cathedral. The scenery and landscape around the town also make for some beautiful picturesque sights. The town makes for a great location for anyone that wishes to go on a walking or cycling holiday.

Getting There
By Car
From the east follow the A960 (the west the A965, the south east the A961, and the south west the A964) until you reach the town. Once in Kirkwall the port terminal is well signposted and easy to find.
By Bus
Kirkwall Bus Station is located near the centre of Kirkwall. Northlink operate a bus service to connect with ferries to/from Hatston ferry terminal.
