About Oran
Oran lies in the northwest area of Algeria, on the Gulf of Oran, situated on the coast by the Mediterranean Sea. The area occupied by Oran has been inhabited since prehistoric times, but the city was originally founded in the 10th century by Moorish Andalusian traders. Oran was then captured by both the Spanish and the Ottomans several times over the course of 300 years, until the French captured Oran in 1831.
Oran is now a major port and an important commercial centre. Oran can be divided into two parts; In the older parts of Oran, you will find buildings from the Arab, Berber, Ottoman and Spanish periods. You will also find the Kasbah within the Spanish quarter, along with an 18th century Ottoman mosque. The newer part of Oran was built by the French from 1831. The French sections of Oran house the commercial and governmental centres. Within the French areas of Oran you will also find Oran's three universities.
