Red Funnel Overview
Red Funnel has the newest cross-Solent fleet and the largest vehicle ferries ever to serve the Southampton to Isle of Wight route. Red Funnel is the original operator to the Isle of Wight and for over 140 years have sailed between Southampton, the gateway to the Isle of Wight, and Cowes, the undisputed home of world yachting.
The Southampton Isle of Wight and South of England Royal Mail Steam Packet Public Limited Company was founded in 1861. Its official name remains the longest name for a registered company in the UK. The shortened name was quickly adopted after 1935 when all the ships operated by the company adopted the famous black-topped red funnel in their livery. Red Funnel's flag is divided diagonally into quarters of (clockwise from the top): white, green, red and blue. This derives from the company's four original steamers: The Pearl, The Emerald, The Ruby and The Sapphire.
Routes
Red Funnel ferries are currently unavailable to book with AFerry.com, however Wightlink Ferries and Hovertravel offer alternative routes to the Isle of Wight.
Red Funnel Ferries sails 24 hours a day, 364 days a year between their well established route of Southampton (England, UK) and East Cowes (Isle of Wight, UK). The conventional car ferries take 55 minutes, and the fast ferry catamarans just 23 minutes.
For alternative routes, please see our page for Wightlink, who offer ferries from Lymington and Portsmouth in England, to Ryde, Fishbourne and Yarmouth on the Isle of Wight, all of which are available to book with AFerry.com.
Onboard Facilities
Red Funnel has a fleet of 3 car ferries, the Red Eagle, Red Falcon and Red Osprey, on which you'll find a bar, a café restaurant and spacious lounges with views over the Solent, and 4 passenger-only Red Jet high speed catamarans, for which it is not possible to pre-book. |
