You can of course bathe in the hot springs (and you totally should!), but as well as that you can enjoy dishes cooked over the natural steam or simply enjoy the spectacle of the springs which are just too hot to bathe in (known as the Hells of Beppu).
Beppu has a fascinating aquarium and an enchanting monkey park. Combined with a trip to the hot springs, you can really be in awe of the natural wonders Japan has to offer.
