More about Lithuania

Lithuania is quickly turning into one of the most interesting countries Europe has to offer.

Bordering with Latvia to the north, Kaliningrad (Russia) to the west and Poland to the south-west, Lithuania has plenty of great places to eat, sleep and see.

Although for many people from Britain Lithuania is one of those countries that disappears into the grey area of our general geographic ignorance, only to surface once a year at the Eurovision song contest, you will be richly rewarded by a visit to this former Soviet country.

Lithuania Travel Guide

Lithuania has plenty to offer with quaint villages, fantastic cities and intriguing folklore around every corner. Although perhaps not as popular as the most famous destinations like New York, Lithuania has the shops, restaurants and night-life to match that of the `Big Apple'.

Travelling in Lithuania

The car is often a sure fire bet for travelling around Lithuania, though it is always worth knowing that the rules of the road are different in Lithuania than in the UK. For example, it is possible to do a U-Turn on the motorway there, and it is often possible to turn right at a red traffic light (when this is possible, there will often be a little white square next to the green light). The upshot of all this is that it is necessary to be extra careful when walking and driving around Lithuania.

Trains often represent a much cheaper way of travelling round. On average the train system in Lithuania is good, with links between most major cities. One thing worth knowing is the fact that long distance trains often have cabins for four to six people to share the journey together in bunk beds. There is also no guarantee these compartments will be single sex. So you have been warned.

Things to see in Lithuania

There are loads of shops in Lithuania. These temples to consumerism can be a great place to have a day out it seems: you start off shopping, then have a coffee break at one of the cafés, then continue with your shopping before finishing off the deal with a dinner at one of the restaurants - all within the same mall.

Gariunai, on the Western edge of Vilnius, is also the Baltic's largest open air market. Here, you can find merchants not just from the far flung regions of Lithuania but from as far away as the Ukraine. It is therefore definitely worth a visit.

There is another major attraction to draw the mature tourist towards Lithuania: its beer. This beer is reputed by many to be as good as some of the finest lagers that Western Europe can supply - and asking for the local brew is apparently a sure-fire way to wins friends and charm people.
