About Bejaia

Formerly known as Bougie and Bugia, Bejaia is a port city in Northern Algeria. With a history that extends to the middle ages when it was it was one of the most prosperous cities on the Mediterranean coast and home of the great Muslim dynasties, the city has been occupied by the Spanish, then the Turks and then then the French. The city has always been driven by trade and introduced the wax candle to foreign traders. The French name for a candle is bougie - hence the old French name for the city.

Today, with a population of more than 900,000 you will certainly find a lot to see and do. Visit Brise de Mer, at the foot of the old town and close to the sea the perfect place for a coffee or a sweet mint tea. Climb to the top of Cape Carbon which features one of the highest lighthouses in the world - the view will take your breath away. Bejaia will not let you down and with an abundance of hotels to choose from it's well worth staying for more than a few days.
