Virtu Ferries History

Virtu Ferries is owned by Virtu Holdings, a 100% Maltese holding company of a family-owned group that has diversified into other business interests over ship-owning time, including other maritime-related activities, the hospitality industry, tourism, and real estate.

Virtu Holdings saw its origins as a ship-owning company in 1945 operating cargo vessels between the Mediterranean and northern European ports. In the early 1980s, in partnership with Italian and Norwegian interests, the company owned and managed a fleet of oil tankers in the Arabian Gulf and traded in petroleum, including salvage of off-specification products from Iraq/Iran war casualties. The company was the operator, on behalf of the Government of Dubai, of the Dubai Dry Docks Tank Cleaning Facilities.

Virtu Ferries Sustainability

Virtù Ferries is committed to reducing its greenhouse gas emissions by at least 50% by 2050 compared to 2008 levels. The company has implemented an environmental policy in line with current regulations, including the use of software approved by DNV-GL to accurately track and report CO2 emissions from its operations. The M/V Saint John Paul II, certified by DNV-GL, complies with the IMO’s Fuel Oil Data Collection System and the EU’s MRV Regulation for monitoring carbon dioxide emissions. The ship also adheres to the International Convention for the Prevention of Pollution from Ships (MARPOL) and has a Ship Energy Efficiency Management Plan (SEEMP) to improve energy efficiency and reduce waste.

Virtù Ferries has adopted several initiatives to minimise its environmental impact, including switching to shore electrical power at berth to reduce fuel consumption and emissions. The company also uses eco-friendly anti-fouling paint on the ship’s hull, which improves fuel efficiency. The Saint John Paul II features a wave-piercing hull designed for optimal energy efficiency and has been tested in advanced hydrodynamic facilities. Additionally, the ship uses low-sulphur fuels, significantly reducing sulphur oxide emissions, well below the mandatory IMO requirements.
