CTN – Compagnie Tunisienne de Navigation has unveiled plans for a next-generation RoPax ferry, developed by OSK Design, marking a further step in the development of ferry services in the Mediterranean.
The planned RoPax ferry will operate on Tunisia - Europe routes, supporting both passenger and freight transport while incorporating low-emission technologies designed to improve environmental performance.
The new vessel is intended to strengthen ferry connections between Tunisia and key European ports, including Barcelona, Genoa, and Marseille, supporting both passenger and freight demand across the region.
Vessel Overview and Capacity
With a length overall of 210 metres, the proposed RoPax ferry is designed for high-capacity, long-distance operations. Once delivered, it is expected to accommodate up to 3,000 passengers in cabins, around 730 cars, and up to 170 freight trucks.
The vessel is designed for a service speed of 24 knots, enabling efficient crossings on busy Mediterranean routes.
Advanced Propulsion and Sustainability Focus
A key feature of the design is its electric propulsion system, powered by dual-fuel diesel and methanol generators. The vessel will also be equipped with azimuth thrusters and a battery package designed for peak-shaving, spinning reserve, and zero-emission port operations.
These technologies aim to reduce emissions while improving operational efficiency, in line with evolving environmental regulations and sustainability objectives within the ferry sector.
Designed for Reliability, Performance, and Flexibility
According to the project outline, the vessel sets new benchmarks in several areas:
- Reliability through advanced machinery and redundant systems to support uninterrupted service
- Performance, offering improved seakeeping and handling for safe and efficient operations
- Flexibility, with adaptable layouts to meet changing operational and regulatory requirements
- Sustainability, using modern energy solutions to reduce environmental impact
Public Tender Expected
CTN is expected to release a public tender for the construction of the vessel, creating an opportunity for shipyards to participate in the development of future ferry capacity in the Mediterranean.
The project reflects an ongoing focus on innovation, sustainability, and improved connectivity, supporting long-term ferry links between North Africa and Southern Europe.
