Viking Line History

Viking Line’s journey began in the spring of 1959 when the first true Baltic Sea car ferry, S/S Viking, was launched by Vikinglinjen Ab, a company founded by Åland sea captain Gunnar Eklund. Shortly after, three shipping companies—Vikinglinjen Ab, Rederi AB Slite, and Ålandsfärjan Ab (later SF Line Ab)—formed a joint marketing company, Oy Viking Line Ab. When two of the companies ceased trading, SF Line became the sole owner, and the business continued under the name Viking Line Abp, now the leading cruise and ferry line in the Baltic region.

Since its inception, more than fifty vessels have been part of Viking Line’s fleet, evolving from modest second-hand ferries to modern, luxurious ships that blend the opulence of cruise liners with high-capacity vehicle decks. Viking Line has continuously adapted to meet the needs of cargo traffic and tourists travelling by car, establishing itself as a pioneer in modern Baltic Sea ferry services.

Viking Line Sustainability

Over the past 15 years, Viking Line has succeeded in reducing carbon dioxide emissions from its vessels by nearly a third. Environmental investments have been made in the Baltic Sea’s most climate-smart vessels and the technology onboard every vessel.

Viking Glory and Viking Grace are already equipped to start running on green fuels, which will enable truly carbon-neutral services in the future.
