The Eurotunnel service was officially opened on 6th May 1994, by HM Queen Elizabeth II and François Mitterrand, the President of France. Freight and passenger services started operating later in 1994. They have carried 100 million vehicles and nearly 500 million people through the Channel Tunnel on their shuttles since.
Travelling with LeShuttle is a sustainable choice. When compared with ferry travel, crossing the channel on LeShuttle emits approximately 52 times less carbon dioxide!
Today, 75% of Eurotunnel’s electrical consumption comes from renewable sources. Getlink (LeShuttle's parent company) is rated B at CDP, the international benchmark for carbon performance.
Eurotunnel also has its own nature reserve, known as Samphire Hoe Nature Reserve, located near the Folkestone Terminal. This reserve was created from the millions of tonnes of chalk marl that were removed from beneath the sea during the construction of The Channel Tunnel. In 2023, it proudly received its 18th Green Flag Award and attracts over 130,000 visitors annually. The reserve is a habitat for 220 bird species and hosts more than 200 plant species each year.
In France, since 2021, 31 hectares of land have been set aside for the purpose of preserving biodiversity. Additionally, they have begun to replace the environmentally harmful mechanical equipment previously used for maintaining the green spaces around the terminal with Salers and Highland cattle.
