NEW: search AFerry ferry sailings directly with ChatGPT or Claude

Find your ferry on AFerry with ChatGPT or Claude

You can now connect AFerry’s ferry search to ChatGPT or Claude. Simply describe your trip in your own words: your assistant will search for suitable sailings, then direct you to AFerry to compare your options and book.

💬 A new way to search for your ferry

You can ask ChatGPT or Claude to search AFerry for a sailing, just as you would ask another person.

For example:

  • “Find me a ferry from Calais to Dover on 1 October in the late morning, for two adults, one eight-year-old child and a car.”
  • “I’d like to travel from Marseille to Tunis on 3 October and return on 10 October. I’m travelling alone, on foot, with my dog.”
  • “What sailings are available from Holyhead to Dublin next Friday afternoon for two adults?”
  • “Run the same search for the following day.”
  • “Show the prices in euros.”

Your assistant gathers the information it needs and shows you the available sailings. At the moment, the AFerry tool only performs searches; once you find the option that suits you, follow the link to AFerry to complete your booking on our website.

📋 What information should you provide?

For the most relevant results, include as much of the following information as possible:

  • your departure and arrival port or city: a country or region alone is not enough;
  • your preferred date and time: if you do not provide a time, the search will use 9 am by default and tell you before it begins;
  • the number of passengers: include the number of adults and the age of every child or infant;
  • how you are travelling: say whether you are travelling on foot or with a car;
  • any pets travelling with you: include the number of dogs or cats.

These details matter because fares and travel options can vary according to passenger ages, vehicles, routes and ferry operators.

🤖 How to connect AFerry to ChatGPT

The connection is available with ChatGPT Plus, Pro, Business, Enterprise and Education plans. You need to set it up on the ChatGPT website, as this cannot currently be done through the mobile or desktop apps.

  1. Open ChatGPT in your browser.
  2. Go to Settings → Security and login.
  3. Turn on Developer mode.
  4. Open the ChatGPT apps page.
  5. Select the + button to create an app that uses a remote server.
  6. Enter this address: https://api.aferry.com/mcp/sailings-search
  7. Choose No Authentication. You do not need an AFerry username, password or access code.
  8. Finish creating the app.
  9. In a conversation, open the + menu, choose Developer mode, then select the AFerry app.

On Business, Enterprise or Education accounts, your workspace administrator may restrict access to developer mode.

⚠️ Before turning on developer mode

Developer mode is a general setting for your ChatGPT account, not a setting that applies only to AFerry. OpenAI advises extra care because other apps added through developer mode may be allowed to take actions involving your data. Only add apps that you know and trust.

The AFerry tool itself is read-only: it can search for and display sailings, but it cannot book, take payments, change or delete anything.

✨ How to connect AFerry to Claude

The connection is available with Claude Free, Pro, Max, Team and Enterprise plans. The Free plan allows one custom connector in total.

For a Free, Pro or Max account:

  1. Open Customize → Connectors.
  2. Select +, then Add custom connector.
  3. Enter this address: https://api.aferry.com/mcp/sailings-search
  4. Leave the advanced settings unchanged. You do not need a username or access code.
  5. Select Add.

In a conversation, use the + button, open Connectors and turn on AFerry.

For Team and Enterprise plans, an administrator must first add the AFerry connector under Organization settings → Connectors. Each user can then find it under Customize → Connectors and select Connect.

🛠️ If the assistant does not start the AFerry search

First, check that the AFerry app or connector is turned on for the conversation. You can then make your request more specific:

“Use the search_ferries tool in the AFerry app to search for this sailing. Do not use web search or another tool.”

🚗 Which searches are currently supported?

You can search for:

  • a one-way or return trip;
  • travel on foot or with a standard car;
  • travel with one or more dogs or cats, where the route allows pets.

The search does not currently support:

  • motorcycles or bicycles;
  • vans, campervans or minibuses;
  • trailers or caravans;
  • freight vehicles;
  • journeys with several separate legs.

You do not need to provide vehicle dimensions. If you include a car, the search uses a standard car.

🧭 What if no results appear?

No results does not always mean that something has gone wrong. AFerry may not offer the route you requested, or the selected sailing may not accept your vehicle or pet.

Some popular searches can also take longer. If the search stops after around 20 seconds, try again or provide a more precise travel time.

🌊 Ready to try it?

Once AFerry is connected, open a conversation with ChatGPT or Claude and describe the trip you would like to make. Your assistant will help you find suitable sailings before directing you to AFerry to compare the results and book.
