About Civitavecchia

Civitavecchia Ferry Port has access to the most important national and European road and rail networks.

Civitavecchia (meaning "Ancient Town") took the brunt of the two World Wars because of its strategic importance as a Roman Port and in the due course, most of the city's archaeological treasures and old buildings were destroyed.

But, some of the interesting sites that still remain are the 16th century Fort Michelangelo and the Piazza Leandra along with some interesting hot spring baths from the Roman times.

The port of Civitavecchia is located on the west coast of the Italian peninsula, just 80 km from the capital Rome. The good location of the city, in the centre of the Mediterranean, has allowed the port of Civitavecchia to become one of the most efficient ports in Italy.

Bad experience.This is mainly caused…

Bad experience. This is mainly caused by the fact that the boat was extremely delayed (depart 13:15 instead of 11AM) and without telling us why. I must say that we did get an email message upfront informing us that the boat would be delayed by one hour; this was actually very correct. But once we were on board, the boat never seemed to be leaving the harbor. And: we were not informed on this. Or perhaps: there might have been some intercom information, but the content of the messages could not be heard and especially not understood (we also asked ourselves why they did not use the several TV screens (mostly not functional), present at several locations to inform the passengers?).We asked the reception for the reason of the delay, but the only answer they gave, was that there were still passengers coming onboard and 'we will be leaving soon'. I guess they were not able and/or allowed to give us a better answer. Our main problem caused by the delay: we missed the train connection to our vacation location. As a result we had two options: either book a hotel in Civitavecchia or hire a taxi. We took a one hour taxi and it costed us 200 Euros.Another thing that did not help to make our stay on the boat a success: numbering of the cabins was not logical and absolutely not what a passenger would expect. We had to do some serious exploring to be able to find our cabin. Besides, the hallways giving access to the cabins were blocked during start and end of the journey by laundry trolleys.About our cabin: at first (more than an our at least after getting on board) it was not available because cleaners were still busy cleaning; and two hours before arrival we were suddenly summoned to get out because the cleaners came in once again. As a result, we had the cabin only available for about half of the journey. Our conclusion: very disappointing and it cost us a lot of (extra) money. We will make a formal complaint to the Grimaldi company with the same message.
