Trasmediterranea History

Trasmediterránea was founded in 1916 through the merger of several Spanish shipping companies, creating one of the largest maritime transport operators in the country. Over the following decades, the company developed an extensive network connecting mainland Spain with the Balearic Islands, Canary Islands, North Africa and international destinations.

The company became a familiar name in Spanish maritime transport, operating passenger and freight services for generations of travellers. In 2002, Trasmediterránea was privatised and later became part of the Acciona Group.

In 2018, Trasmediterránea was acquired by Naviera Armas, creating Armas Trasmediterránea and bringing together two of Spain’s most recognised ferry brands. In 2026, Armas Trasmediterránea's Canary Islands operations were integrated into the newly created Baleària Canarias brand following Baleària’s acquisition of those operations.

Trasmediterranea Sustainability

Throughout its history, Trasmediterránea helped provide essential maritime links for passengers, vehicles and freight, supporting economic activity, tourism and regional connectivity across Spain and neighbouring regions.

Today, services from the former Armas Trasmediterránea network continue to benefit from investment in fleet improvements, digitalisation, and operational efficiency. These initiatives aim to enhance the passenger experience while supporting the long-term development of ferry transport across the regions served by these routes.
