Algeria by car: documents, insurance and TPD

Taking your car to Algeria by ferry? Find out which vehicle documents to carry, how the customs TPD works, where to arrange insurance and when to arrive at the port. You can also explore AFerry's most-booked routes and booking patterns.

📌 Before you travel

✔ Travel documents: Take a valid passport and check visa requirements for your nationality.
✔ Vehicle: Bring the original registration certificate and any owner authorisation required.
✔ TPD: The Titre de Passage en Douane covers temporary admission of your vehicle.
✔ Insurance: Arrange motor insurance recognised in Algeria; border insurance can be purchased at an authorised office at the arrival port.
✔ Check-in: Arrival requirements vary considerably between operators and ports.
✔ Summer restrictions: Vehicle restrictions applied in 2025 and 2026 and could return.
✔ Booking insight: 49% of AFerry July 2026 car bookings were made at least 60 days ahead.

TPD: what it means and how to apply

The TPD (Titre de Passage en Douane) is the Algerian customs document for temporary admission of a foreign-registered vehicle. It also covers certain temporary departures of Algerian-registered vehicles. The permitted stay is not the time taken to obtain the document.

Documents for the TPD

Traveller Documents
Algerians living abroad Valid passport, residence card and vehicle registration certificate
Foreign visitors Valid passport and vehicle registration certificate
Algerian residents taking a vehicle abroad temporarily Passport, registration certificate and applicable fuel-tax receipt
Apply in advance through the ALCES customs portal: create an account, choose Travellers / TPD, upload the requested documents and submit the request. Further checks or completion of the procedure may still be needed on arrival.

TPD validity

Category Validity
Algerians living abroad 6 months, non-extendable within a 12-month period
Foreign visitors 3 months, extendable up to 6 months
Algerian residents temporarily taking their vehicle abroad 6 months

💡Important distinction: 3 and 6 months are the periods for which the vehicle may remain under the customs procedure, not the time needed to obtain the TPD. Comply with the expiry date and complete customs discharge when the vehicle leaves.

Driving licence and vehicle registration: check your country’s rules

For a foreign-registered car, carry the original vehicle registration certificate, your national driving licence and any supporting authorisation. Driving-licence recognition can vary by nationality, residence and length of stay. Verify your government's Algeria travel advice and the Algerian authorities' requirements before travel.

Car insurance: what you need and where to buy it

A European Green Card does not itself provide the required motor cover for driving in Algeria. Visitors bringing a foreign-registered vehicle need insurance recognised locally, commonly called border insurance. It can be purchased from an authorised insurance office at the Algerian arrival port before driving away. Some insurers may also offer advance arrangements; availability depends on the provider.

⚠️ Check-in versus driving cover: your ferry operator may separately request proof of international motor insurance before boarding. This does not replace the cover required for driving in Algeria.

What ferry operators require

Operator Vehicle document rules
Algérie Ferries Original registration document and vehicle ownership/insurance documents according to operator conditions; details require a final direct check
GNV Registration certificate, insurance documentation requested for boarding and correctly reserved vehicle space
Baleària Registration and owner authorisation when applicable; provisional plates and crossed-out registration documents are not accepted
Corsica Linea Vehicle plate, model and dimensions must match the booking

💡Borrowed, company or leased car? Check in advance which signed authorisation or certificate is accepted, and enter exact vehicle details in your AFerry booking.
