The company was created through the merger of four major shipping companies: Ferrer Peset y Compañía, Línea de Vapores Corrientes, Sociedad Anónima Navegación e Industria, and Compañía Valenciana de Vapores Correos de África. From its inception, Trasmediterranea aimed to provide reliable passenger and cargo services, particularly focusing on connecting mainland Spain with the Balearic Islands, the Canary Islands, and North Africa. Throughout the early 20th century, the company expanded its routes and modernised its fleet to accommodate the growing demand for maritime transportation.
During the latter half of the 20th century, Trasmediterranea continued to enhance its services by introducing more comfortable and efficient vessels, gradually transitioning from steamships to motor ships. The company was nationalised in 1978 but later privatised in 2002, marking a new era of growth and modernisation. In 2018, Trasmediterranea became part of the Naviera Armas Group, one of the largest shipping operators in Spain, which allowed for further investment and fleet renewal.
Trasmediterranea is committed to sustainability and environmental responsibility, actively working to reduce its ecological footprint. The company has implemented several measures to enhance energy efficiency, including the use of eco-friendly technologies and the modernisation of its fleet with more fuel-efficient vessels.
