Wasaline officially joins Stena Line

Stena Line has officially completed its acquisition of Wasaline, confirming the ferry operator’s integration into Stena Line’s European ferry network. The completion was marked by a formal ceremony in Umeå and follows all required regulatory and local authority approvals.

The acquisition was first announced on 4 November 2025 and involves the continued operation of the ferry service connecting Vaasa in Finland with Umeå in Sweden. For travellers, this means ferry crossings on the Vaasa–Umeå route continue without any changes to schedules or onboard operations.

Vaasa–Umeå ferry crossings continue as normal

The ferry Aurora Botnia will continue to operate the Vaasa–Umeå route according to the existing timetable, offering approximately 20–26 ferry departures per week. Ownership of the vessel remains with Kvarken Link, a company jointly owned by the cities of Vaasa and Umeå.

Wasaline will continue to operate under its existing brand name, with only minor adjustments following its inclusion in the Stena Line group.

Wasaline becomes part of Stena Line’s European ferry network

With the completion of the acquisition, Wasaline becomes part of Stena Line’s wider European ferry and port operations, which include around 20 ferry routes and approximately 40 vessels. The integration provides long-term operational stability for ferry services between Sweden and Finland, supporting both passenger travel and freight transport.

Hybrid ferry highlights focus on sustainable ferry operations

Aurora Botnia is a hybrid ferry powered by biogas and batteries and operates on what is recognised as the first international Green Shipping Corridor currently in operation. The Vaasa–Umeå ferry route is widely regarded as a leading example of more sustainable ferry transport in the Baltic region.

The completed acquisition underlines the continued importance of reliable ferry connections between Sweden and Finland, supporting regional cooperation, trade and everyday travel by sea.
