It is possible to travel by car between all major settlements on the islands using the small road network. However, the best way to see the islands is almost certainly on foot - this is the only way to access the most beautiful and tranquil spots on the islands, which are located far away from any roads. If you are travelling by foot, hitchhiking is a safe and easy way of travelling longer distances, the locals are used to hitchhikers and tend to be very friendly.
Perhaps one of the most amazing and less well known attractions of the Hebrides, is the opportunity to see the Northern Lights. The best time of year for this is at winter. The low light pollution of the islands makes it a perfect location from which to see the Northern Lights without having to leave the UK.
