About Kefalonia
Kefalonia, or Cefalonia, is the largest of the Ionian islands and has around 32,00 inhabitants. Cefalonia is one of the most beautiful Greek islands, with stunning scenery combining mountains, pine forests, clear water and white sandy beaches.
Kefalonia town and settlements were almost all destroyed in an earthquake in 1953, which has left Cefalonia with little in the way of ancient architecture or remains. Kefalonia benefits from a warm climate and some beautiful beaches, such as Sami, Myrtos, Xi and Skala.
There is plenty to see and do on Kefalonia, including the Roman villa just outside Skala with its beautiful mosaic floor, and the Drogarti and Melissani caves. There is also a Venetian castle at Assos, in the north-west of the island. For the more active, Kefalonia offers boats for hire and horse-riding trips into the mountains, where you can experience the quieter side of Kefalonia and visit ruined villages and ancient vineyards.
Kefalonia is known for its excellent Robola wine; this can be purchased throughout the island.
