Fred Olsen History

Fred Olsen Express was founded in 1974 and was formerly known as Ferry Gomera, S.A. The first sailing took place July 8, 1974, when a ferry set sail from the Gomeran capital of San Sebastian de La Gomera for the town of Los Cristianos in Tenerife.

The first ferry to operate the route was the 'Benchijigua' ferry, which is named after a small village located in the south of La Gomera. Fred Olsen also has a tradition in which all names of the ships should begin with the letter 'B'.

The company has continued to expand and now they currently operate six large fast ferries. All of these ferries were built by two Australian companies that dominate the fast ferry market.

Fred Olsen Sustainability

Fred Olsen designed their fast ferries to ensure that they were built with highly durable materials and low emissions. The ships were made as light as possible to ensure lower fuel usage, this goes in hand with their careful selection of fuel to reduce emissions. Their ships have also been painted with fluoropolymers to ensure water resistance and no paint waste at sea.

Recently, in 2014, Fred Olsen said goodbye to paper tickets to reduce paper waste. They also continued this throughout other parts of the company such as offices and onboard. This also continues with the removal of plastic onboard in 2019 which has been replaced with biodegradable dinnerware.
