Blue Star Ferries was founded in 1965 and formerly names as Strintzis Lines by the Strintzis family from Lixouri, Kefalonia. The company was rebranded as Blue Ferries in 2000 following Attica Enterprises' acquisition of a large stake in the company.
In 2000 the company ordered two roll-on/roll-off ferries built at the Dutch shipyard Van der Giessen de Noord. These were the first two ships operated under their new name 'Blue Star Ferries' and were named Blue Star 1 and Blue Star 2. They now have a fleet of around 11 ships.

In terms of the ships themselves Blue Star Ferries indicate many different areas they have improved their sustainability efforts. The company reduced their vessels’ greenhouse gas emission intensity per nautical mile traveled by 1%, compared to the lbaseline in 2019. They used 85% recycled paper for all purposes onboard. Onboard they reduced vessel water consumption intensity per passenger by 4.4%.
They also like to implement changes in headquarters and offices. Blue Star Ferries also reduced paper consumption for all purposes and commercial paper use by 12.9% and 13.8% respectively in offices. They reduced office electricity consumption and office electricity consumption intensity per employee by 9.4% and 14.1% respectively.
