Balearia was established in June 1998 with 16 founding partners and 126 workers. It is owned and founded by Adolfo Utor. In 2005, Balearia merged with Umafisa, owned by the Matutes family, with Utor remaining the majority shareholder. He now stands as the sole shareholder, as of 2021.
The company initially focused on routes connecting Denia to Ibiza and Formentera, quickly establishing itself as a reliable option for their travellers. From the outset, the company has been committed to new technologies, constantly improving the fleet and opening new lines. They are continually looking to improve services to better the customer experience.
Balearia takes pride in their sustainability efforts and shows this through different means. Balearia is a pioneer in using LNG as a fuel source for its vessels, significantly lowering greenhouse gas emissions compared to traditional marine fuels. This shift helps to minimise air pollution and contributes to cleaner seas.
Onboard, Balearia has implemented waste management systems on its vessels to promote recycling and reduce waste. They encourage passengers to participate in recycling initiatives during their journeys. The company has also adopted practices to minimise single-use plastics and promote the use of eco-friendly materials onboard.
