The name of the town is believed to have derived from a prince called Lathar, son of an ancient Irish king, who was granted the lands by his father. The area came to be called Lathar-na, meaning the lands of Lathar, and this has been anglicized to Larne.

Larne is a busy town that offers a wide range of shops and several excellent parks and recreation facilities. In Larne you can enjoy numerous outdoor activities, including golf, cycling and bird watching. Carnfunnock Country Park has combined attractions and entertainment with the splendor of its natural scenery.

The cultural centre in Larne's Borough is the Carnegie Library which consists of the Larne Museum, John Clifford Gallery, Larne Art Club, Larne Drama Circle and Larne & District Historical Society. In Larne Borough there are many towns and villages worth visiting such as Ballycarry, Cairncastle and Glynn.

Troon is home to a famous golf course, the Royal Troon Golf course, which has hosted the Open Golf Championship on a number of occasions, Troon also has one of the largest beaches in Scotland.

    • We decide to use the ferry as we were taking our daughter over to university in Dundee. It was a pleasure to use this sailing and we will use it again.

    My journey from Larne to Cairnryan and back

    • The journey out was redirected to Cairnryan owing to rough seas. The return trip was also from Cairnryan because I missed the sailing from Troon due to heavy traffic coming down from Fortwilliam. However, I found the staff in Troon that evening very supportive and helpful . They redirected me to Cairnryan.
