About Yakushima
Yakushima is a subtropical island off the south coast of Kyushu and belongs to the Osumi islands in the Japanese prefecture of Kagoshima. Covered by a cedar forest that hosts some of Japan's oldest living trees, the island covers an area of 500 km² and has about 13,000 inhabitants. In the extensive cedar forest of the island, trees more than 1000 years old are lovingly called Yakusugi (a combination of Yakushima and Sugi, the Japanese word for cedar). The forests of Yakushima are said to have inspired the forest environment in Hayao Miyazaki's film Princess Mononoke. As a subtropical, mountainous island, Yakushima has many rains all year round and inspires a local saying that it rains "35 days a month".
Yakushima ferry port
The ferry port of Miyanoura is a regional port on the northeast shore of Yakushima Island. It is connected to Kagoshima and Tanegashima by scheduled ferry and high-speed jet foils.
