Steam Packet Ferries

Before the Isle of Man Steam Packet was formed, there were multiple irregular and inconsistent companies that served the Isle of Man. However, due to the inconsistencies the the island could be disconnected from services for weeks at a time. In 1830 the company was formed to solve this issue. On the 30th of June 1830, the first Douglas to Liverpool service was made.

The company's vessels were used during the war for transport, a large of them had been lost during this time. The company continued to try and rebuild itself over the years. However, in June 2007, a new CEO, Mark Woodward, was appointed to improve the company's services, to return to the classic livery, and to promote the island's culture. Since then the company has grown largely and now offers multiple crossings and customer amenities.

Isle of Man Steam Packet is aiming to invest in eco-friendly vessels of the future that use cleaner fuels and the latest maritime technology to improve efficiencies. They also ensure that their RoPax vessel is powered by the world’s most efficient four-stroke diesel engine, which is recognised for its high level of fuel efficiency and significantly reduces exhaust emissions.

Steam Packet also note that any excess electricity generated is stored by the vessel’s onboard batteries, which are used during periods of higher demand, or while the vessel is alongside in port to reduce emissions.
