Isles of Scilly Travel

Isles of Scilly Travel, established on March 26, 1920, was created to ensure a consistent maritime link between Penzance and the Isles of Scilly. Initially, the company operated the Peninnis, a converted fishery protection vessel, but soon recognised the need for a purpose-built passenger ship. This led to the launch of the first Scillonian ferry in 1926.

In 1956, the second Scillonian entered service, followed by the current in 1977. Over the decades, these vessels have been vital lifelines, transporting passengers and goods between the mainland and the islands. By May 2024, the company celebrated a significant milestone, welcoming its five millionth ferry passenger aboard.

Today the company continues to operate regular sailings from Penzance to St. Mary's, maintaining the company's century-long commitment to connecting the Isles of Scilly with the mainland.

Isles of Scilly Travel is dedicated to minimising its environmental impact, particularly through its ferry operations. The company has implemented several initiatives to promote sustainability.

Efforts are underway to enhance recycling facilities on their passenger ferry and the freight ship. This includes providing additional recycling points and trialing the use of wooden collars for cargo pallets to replace single-use plastic wrapping.

Collaborations with the Smart Energy Project aim to improve energy efficiency across operations. Additionally, the company has installed solar panels at Land's End Airport to harness renewable energy.

Partnerships with organisations like ORCA and the Isles of Scilly Wildlife Trust focus on marine conservation. The company's ferry hosts a wildlife ranger to educate passengers about local marine life, and the route has been recognised as the UK's best for wildlife spotting for three consecutive years.
