Wightlink and its predecessors have been offering ferry services to and from the Isle of Wight for over 160 years. In the early 1800s, ferries operated between the island and Lymington as well as Portsmouth. Subsequently, steam ferries began running a circular route connecting Lymington, Yarmouth, Cowes, Ryde, and Portsmouth.
The company was previously called SeaLink, but it adopted the name Wightlink in 1990. Since the start, the company has experienced significant growth, evident in its increasing demand for new vessels. In October 2006, Wightlink revealed plans to build two new ferries for the Yarmouth to Lymington route. Later, the company announced that a third ferry would join the fleet in the spring of 2009. In March 2008, Wightlink disclosed that it had placed an order with FBMA Marine for the construction of two new passenger catamarans for the Portsmouth to Ryde service.
